Croatia’s duel with Portugal promises to be one of the most thrilling contests of the tournament. Both teams are devastating going forward, which opens up the possibility of this game being an open affair.

Luka Modric is expected to return to Croatia’s side for the crucial game. There are no injury worries for Fernando Santos’ side.

Croatia ended Spain’s 14-match unbeaten run in their last group game. Portugal on the other hand drew 3-3 against Hungary, as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to form with a brace.

Also the Croats have rested for an extra day as compared to their opponents.

Ronaldo’s side has the upper hand in terms of head-to-head record against Croatia, winning all three of their previous encounters.

Along with Modric, Ivan Rakitic will play a key role in midfield against the Portuguese.

Pepe and the rest of the Portugal defense will have to be at their very best to thwart attacks from the hugely talented Croatia attack.

Despite qualifying for the round of 16, Portugal have not looked convincing at the tournament so far.

Expect them to face plenty of problems against Croatia.

Possible starting XIs

Portugal: Patricio, Guerreiro, Carvalho, Pepe, Vierinha, Moutinho, Gomes, Carvalho, Mario, Nani and Ronaldo

Croatia: Subasic, Stinic, Vida, Corluka, Srna, Badelj, Modric, Brozovic, Rakitic, Perisic, Mandzukic

72Betting prediction:

Croatia 2-1 Portugal

The world’s most popular and loved football league is back. Players and fans are all set for a re-union this weekend as football season comes to life again. After pre-season friendlies, promotional tours and sponsor campaigns, it is time for the action to finally shift on the pitch.

Though the transfer window has not yet official shut, clubs have already signed and shipped player in order to build the perfect squad. Though champions Chelsea did not show much interest in summer window, their challengers were busy cracking deal to mount a serious transfer challenge.

With 10 tantalizing matches to look forward to, here is our preview guide to Gameweek 1 of the Premier League.

Arsenal launch their 2015-16 campaign in a London Derby at home against West Ham United. Having beaten defending champions Chelsea to win the Community Shield on Sunday, the Gunners appear to be in fine form this season. Having secured Petr Cech from the Blues had helped solve their goalkeeping problems. But Wenger’s real challenge will be to sustain his team’s form right throughout the season. West Ham have a new manager in Salven Bilic and have made some key signing like Dimitri Payet. Last season, they lost their way after a strong first half. The Hammer will be hoping to secure European football qualification this year.

Newcastle United host Southampton at St. James’ Park in their first match of the new season. New manager Steve McClaren has a tough rebuilding job to do and will know this season could be another tough battle. Having signed Aleksandar Mitrovic, the club will have more teeth up front in attack. But their inconsistency has left Magpies fans fuming of late. Southampton performed beyond expectations last season. Despite exodus of player, Ronal Koeman’s team was in the top 4 for major part of season. They have again lost an influential player in the form of Morgan Schneiderlin this season. It remains to be seen whether the Dutchman can weave his magic once again at St. Mary’s.

Liverpool perhaps are faced with the most daunting challenge in their league opener as they travel to Stoke City. Britannia Staidum is a tough place to play and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping his side emerges out of the battle relatively unscathed. Having signed some quality players, Liverpool’s attack now boasts of Ings, Benteke, Sturridge and Firmino and is good enough to cope without Sterling. Most fans will remember these two sides played on the final day of last season. It was Steven Gerrard’s last Liverpool game and Stoke played party spoilers with a 6-1 drubbing.

Having relinquished their throne to Chelsea, Manchester City will be looking to wrestle back their title this season. Manuel Pellegrini’s men will be looking to a make a statement of their intent with a win away at West Bromwich Albion. City have sold Jovetiv and signed Sterling this season. Tony Pulis’ side have a tough task at hand in the opening game as the Citizens will want to take home nothing less than three points. Their last battle at the Hawthorns ended 3-1 in the favor of the visitors.

With 10 tantalizing matches to look forward to, here is our preview guide to Gameweek 1 of the Premier League.

Manchester United kick-off their campaign on Saturday against Tottenham Hotpur at Old Trafford. Having spent considerable cash on some of the best players, Louis van Gaal will be hoping his team starts the season with three points. Spurs on the other hand have been unusually quiet during the summer. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will finally want to break the club’s UEFA Champions League jinx this season.

Premier League first timers Bournemouth take on Aston Villa in their debut game at home. Villa’s best player Christian Benteke was sold to Liverpool in the summer, considerably weakening their strike force. However, manager Tim Sherwood has made some quality signing that can fill in the void of their former star striker. Playing against a newly promoted side is one of the toughest tasks in the league. The atmosphere inside the Vitality Stadium will be hostile to say the least when the Londoners arrive.

Everton face a tough task in their first match as new boys Watford visit the Goodison Park on Saturday. No team likes to play against a newly promoted side in the early part of the season. With the likes of Aaron Lennon in the Toffees’ ranks, manager Roberto Martinez will be looking to outclass the visitors with his team depth. However, Watford have played in the top division several times before and will be up for the fight.

Leicester City and Sunderland will battle it out at King Power stadium to launch their Premier League campaigns. Both teams were involved in an intense relegation battle throughout last season and will be looking to accumulate some points early in order to avoid another scrap this season. The Foxes will play under a new manager after sacking Nigel Pearson, while the Black Cats retained Dick Advocaat for another season.

Norwich and Crystal Palace will go head-to-head at Carrow Road. Palace registered their best ever finish in the Premier League era last season. Manager Alan Pardew will hope to better that performance in this latest campaign. The home side’s manager Alex Neil’s big task this season is to make sure his side does not get relegated to the Championship.

Champions Chelsea start their bid to retain the Premier League title in a tricky fixture at home to Swansea. The Blues did little business in the transfer market in the summer as they sold Petr Cech to Arsenal and replaced him with Asmir Begovic. Jose Mourinho believes his side from last season is good enough to beat competition this year as well. Under Gary Monk, Swansea have become a force to be reckoned with. However, the visitors will want to improve upon their away form this season.

Troubled Manchester United winger Angel di Maria is headed for the Old Trafford exit door.

His move to European big spenders Paris Saint Germain is set to materialize when the Argentine completes his medical within the next 24 hours.

Having signed for the Red Devils from Real Madrid last summer for a record British transfer fee of £59.7m, Di Maria is expected to meet his new employers in Doha.

The transfer fee for the deal is believed to be in the region of about £44.5m.

The 27-year-old has a poor first season in England and clearly failed to settle at his new club.

He did not join his teammates during their pre-season tour of the United States as well, leading to speculation of his impending move.

Though the former Real Madrid man started off brightly, his performances began dipping from mid-season and he never really managed to hit peak form again.

From United’s perspective, the acquisition of Di Maria didn’t go according to plan. The fact they paid a big sum and end up making a loss at the time of his sale has made matters worse for Louis van Gaal.

Online gambling giant Betfair has joined hands with English Premier League club Sunderland AFC to become the official betting partner of the team.

Sunderland has a strong fan base in UK and is considered a formidable outfit especially while playing at home.

With this news deal, brand Betfair will be showcased via advertisements and other channels inside the Stadium of Light as well as football broadcasts in Europe.

The agreement between the two parties was signed last week. Sunderland fans and club’s stakeholders will now be able to avail special promotions on the betting site.

Though Sunderland players on their shirt won’t sport Betfair logo, in-stadium branding as well as post and pre-match backdrops for player and manager interviews will feature the brand prominently.

Speaking on the deal, Betfair’s head of media, Stephen Mault said:

“We are thrilled to have signed a deal with Sunderland to become the club’s official UK betting partner. Sunderland is a club with great heritage and we look forward to growing a successful relationship over the course of the upcoming season.”

Betfair is not the only iGaming brand the Black Cats have signed a deal with. The club has also entered into an agreement with Dafabet from Asia.

Dafabet will now sponsor Sunderland’s shirts as well as kits for the new EPL season. Betfair will however remain their premier betting partner.

This is not the first time Betfair has collaborated with an English football club. Their previous partnerships include several other clubs including Manchester United.

Premier League clubs have been busy signing up and shipping out players in the transfer market this summer. This is their last chance to buy/sell players before the season commences in August.

In a sense, the managers have made up their mind of what their squad should look like come the new season. It is now time to make it happen. As most teams are in the market for players, the chance of losing out on key players always persists.

So far, it appears as though Manchester United and Louis van Gaal have been the busiest of their counterparts. The club has already signed four players  - Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Also, they have sold Robin van Persie to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Champions Chelsea already have a solid squad. But they have been active in the goalkeeping department. The Blues have replaced Petr Cech with Asmir Begovic.

Manchester City are always busy in the transfer market. So far they seem to have made the biggest splash by signing high-profile youngster Raheem Sterling from Liverpool for £49million.

There is a huge debate brewing as to whether the England attacker is worth the money or not. The new EPL season will give fans evidence as to what prompted City to make such an offer for his services.

Expecting Sterling imminent transfer, Brendan Rodgers has shored up thing by bringing on board Danny Ings, James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne.

With some time still left on the clock, big names like Sergio Aguero have been linked to a move to England.

Also it would be interesting to see if David de Gea stays put in Manchester.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane dragged Irish bookmaker Paddy Power to High Court for infringing his image rights.

The company, known for making controversial adverts, had made a bit of habit of the same. They produced UK’s most complained-about ad in 2002. Also, Paddy Power came under fire for their 2012 advert, showing blind footballer kicking a cat into a tree.

The latest PR stunt of the company featured Ireland’s assistant manager Roy Keane. It contains the image of the former Manchester United captain (depicting William Wallace from the movie Braveheart), with a message that read:

“You may take our points but at least we have our freedom (ya wee pussies).”

Making an obvious reference to Scotland’s rejection of independence in a referendum last year, the betting giant made use of Keane’s image to taunt Scotland fans before their Euro 2016 qualifying fixture against Ireland last month.

The ad (40 foot poster) appeared on a lorry stationed outside Ireland’s football stadium

Naturally the ad hurt the sentiments of Scottish people and offended Keane as well, resulting in the latter dragging the bookmaker to court. A&L Goodbody representing Roy Keane and Arthur Cox on the side of Paddy Power, considered the two biggest law firms in Ireland will conduct the arguments in court for their clients.

Speaking on the entire matter, Paddy Power spokesman said:

“Roy Keane has taken legal action against us following his face appearing on our Braveheart billboard ahead of the Ireland Scotland game, it’s with the lawyers so obviously we can’t talk about it, but hopefully they won’t take our freedom to have a bit of crack.”
